When the Morning-After Pill Fails
Effectiveness
As a contraceptive, emergency contraception is only partially effective:
- According to the Canadian Federation of Sexual Health, emergency conception, properly taken, is approximately 95% effective within 24 hours, 85% effective within 25 to 48 hours and 58% effective between 49 and 72 hours.
- If fertilization has already occurred when a woman takes emergency contraception, the high dosage could act to kill her preborn child- a living human being.
- Should emergency contraception fail, the mother is still faced with the question of how she will respond to the baby in her womb.
